The celebration comprised a number of announcements and presentations, the most important of which was a tribute paid to ECSSR Director General H.E. Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi by the employees of the Center in honor of his remarkable achievements. During the celebration, distinguished employees of the Center were honored, and it was announced that a new monthly magazine, Afaq Al Mustaqbal, will be launched.
The festivities began with a speech by Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi, which was read on his behalf by Mr. Abdullah Hussein Al-Sahlawi, ECSSR Executive Director. In the speech, Dr. Al-Suwaidi affirmed that the ECSSR was born of the efforts of H.H. General Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. He highlighted the fact that the ECSSR owed its success to the directives and continuing support of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed, as well as the unlimited support of H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State.
H.E. Dr. Al-Suwaidi went on to praise noteworthy ECSSR staff members who have exerted significant efforts in realizing the objectives of the Center. He added that while some of these colleagues were still in the Center and others have left to join other institutions, what bound all was a sincere belief in the importance of the Center’s foundation, irrespective of the obstacles and sacrifices faced during the course of its realization.
H.E. Dr. Al-Suwaidi then highlighted some of the ECSSR’s achievements over the last fifteen years. He said the Center had so far issued more than 3,000 research papers for decision-makers, in addition to 65 opinion polls and field surveys. Furthermore, the Center has held fourteen Annual Conferences, fourteen Annual Energy Conferences, as well as eleven Specialized Conferences, 25 symposia, 39 workshops and 301 lectures. The Center has also participated in 36 book fairs, sixteen external conferences, and has been visited by more than 650 local, Arab and international dignitaries and delegations. Moreover, the Center has signed 48 cooperation agreements with local and international institutions.
The Center has also published around 650 books, translated texts and monographs, as well as over 4,000 issues of Akhbar Al Sa'ah – a news analysis bulletin – and more than 3,600 issues of Al 'Alam Al Youm—a special bulletin. Both bulletins are specially issued for decision-makers. The Center has also produced 32 issues of the report entitled “Emirates Press: Trends and Interests.” Finally, the Center also continues to send round-the-clock SMS alerts to more than 1,000 subscribers.
The ECSSR has received a number of prizes and has been paid tribute to on more than eighteen occasions. Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al-Maktoum Awards in 2006, specified for the best UAE strategic website and the Golden Award for the best website state-wide.
H.E. Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi’s speech concluded, “Today, we remember all these achievements and look forward to the future with a sincere affirmation to preserve them and exert every effort to be worthy of belonging to this great scientific edifice. We still believe that tomorrow will always be better than today and that what is sown today will be reaped tomorrow in the form of achievements and success, which will assert the credibility of the Center and its pioneering role in serving our beloved country.”
On behalf of the staff of the ECSSR, Mr. Mohammad Abdullah Al-Ali, the Director of the Media Department, gave a speech affirming that the support that the Center had received from the state’s wise leadership – represented by H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the State, and H.H. General Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and President of the ECSSR – was the driving force behind the Center’s fifteen years of pioneering work. During this period, he said, the Center had fulfilled many achievements and received numerous awards.
He added that without the persistent efforts and pioneering vision of ECSSR Director General H.E. Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi the Center could not have attained its distinguished regional and international status. He went on to say, “We have gained experience and knowledge and acquired skills in the realms of research, media, analyzing political, economic and strategic studies, as well as methods of communicating within our Gulf environment and with countries across the world.” He expressed the staff’s appreciation of the distinguished scientific and academic status of H.E. Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi and the pride they take in working under his leadership. He concluded his speech by saying that out of their belief in the important role performed by the Center in all spheres, the staff looked forward to realizing greater achievements in the future..
After the staff speech, Mr. Mohammed Al Ali said that, " Our celebration today on the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research does not only constitute a pride for every citizen, but also for every Arab and everybody interested in research and culture. I would like to express my personal feelings and those of a group of my colleagues who are attending the event along with you. I am one of the young citizens who started their career in this center and I consider the day on which we joined the center as marking our real start of work after graduation.
Therefore every day of our work at the center, particularly in the first years, was for us a new experience we learnt from.one of the lessons we learnt from the center is that anyone who does not achieve progress, lags behind the others. Whatever we used to be proud of yesterday, becomes merely a routine task we perform today and therefore we have to keep at pace with a changing world and should always bring a new thing everyday."
He said that the ECSSR Media Department is proud of the variety of its activities, units and sections which work together as one team. We at the Media Department monitor at least 300 news, media and research sources daily including newspapers, Internet news sites, official reports and think tanks using 9 languages. This is in addition to about 180 TV channels. We summarize and analyze these sources and make use of the information we obtain in order to issue the following publications:1. "Al Alam Al Yawm" Newsletter: At this unit our experts summarize, translate and monitor the most important world events in addition to what is published daily about the United Arab Emirates. So far we have published 3678 issues of this newsletter.2. "Akhbar Al Saah" analytical newsletter: we have so far published 4050 issues of this newsletter.3. The Media Monitoring Section content has accumulated about 250 thousand articles that have been archive according to a computerized system that enables accessibility easily. 4. "Local Press Report": this is a monthly report which we started to prepare three years ago. The report includes statistics and analyses of the issues addressed by the local newspapers. The report has become a reference for official entities and many researchers and writers.5. "Non-periodical reports: these reports address with analyses many local, Arab and international media issues. We have issued hundreds of such reports to date.
Mr. Mohammed Al Ali added that he has the pleasure to announce at the ceremony the launch of "Future Horizon magazine" which will be, with your Excellency's guidance and directives, an addition to the Arab periodicals. The magazine will include an in-depth consistency and offer news, informative and field reports. This is to attract the most important local, Arab and international writers, specialists and decision makers to contribute to the magazine or facilitate making interviews with them in addition to conducting extensive field surveys and international and local polls. I have the pleasure to present to your Excellency a copy of the magazine's trial issue cover for this month hoping the first issue of the magazine will be published next month.
Finally, H.E. Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi paid tribute to the distinguished employees of the ECSSR and lauded their contribution to the work of the Center. The celebration ended with a dinner party for the staff hosted by H.E. Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi.
